RGU Tutoring days

One of my career highlights was the time at Gray’s as a buddying lecturer in Communication Design course.

I started as a visiting lecturer during the pandemic. Back then it felt like the biggest gamble, if not a straight up mistake - I reduced my agency work to part time so that I can show up at the university with no teaching experience or proper qualifications.

For a guy who wants to be kept as far away from people as possible, I literally put myself on the stage. Nice one, Pav.

At the start I had little idea what’s going on. I had no understanding of UK’s higher education. My first virtual seminar was streamed on the phone as I had no reliable computer microphone or webcam. Ah, those were the days.

But after the rocky COVID start, it only got better.

I’ve built my curriculum materials, got to grips with presentation skills and even connected some students with potential workplaces. I met masses of inspiring individuals - that’s both the teachers and students - and ultimately learned more than during my student times there.

Yes I had to record and stream gazilion of tutorials and presentations, but because of my industrial background I wanted to get involved in production of promo materials. Since nobody opposed that, I’d grab my rusty Sony and run around degree shows to capture highlights and teasers, typically produced and released on they day of the launch.

Why? Well It’s refreshing to for once make content aimed at teenagers as opposed to MDs of the oil world who just want to get more business.

I really enjoyed making the ‘hype videos’ for the stage 2 students. My task was to take the best of the work from a given year and remix it into an in-your-face reel so that the next cohort knows what to expect. Much fun and getting the brief of ‘make these people excited about learning’ is a rare thing nowadays.
